William & John: No. 7
Here’s a tip about how you know a publication is actually rare – when you can’t find it for sale anywhere on the internet! So it was with some deep google research that we finally found some information on the Australian gay lifestyle mag, William & John. It was named after its founders, Willam Easton and John Baker and only 8 issues were published (Issue 1 came out in 1972). Typical of this repressed era, there was a push by the NSW state government to censor the publication, and there was an attempt to charge the publishers with obscenity. During the course of this bullshit, their names, ages and addresses were printed by the Sydney Morning Herald and the pair were sacked from their jobs.
This is an important document of gay Australian history.
