Tilak Samarawickrema: Modern Woven Art from Sri Lanka
A book with a blank spine is always intriguing, but cracking this one was something else. Inside is pages and pages of the most incredible geometric weavings, reminiscent of the textile art of the Bauhaus and 80’s Memphis design. Stranger still that this work came by way of Sri Lanka in the mid-90s, inspired as they were by the architect Tilak’s country, and the ornate facades of its temples and palaces. With an introduction by Pierre Restany (the French art critic of Domus) that puts it all in perspective, this catalogue is what the best art book discoveries always lead to – a new artist obsession and a desire to make more art!
