People of Kau
By Leni Riefenstahl.
In 1975, the photographer and filmmaker Leni Reifenstahl spent 16 weeks documenting her impressions of life among the South East Nuba people of Kau. Shot in vivid Kodachrome, Reifenstahl captured many of the timid and sometimes hostile tribe's actions – including ritual dances and knife fights – with the aid of telescopic lenses. Amazing in itself considering that these images (particularly those of elaborately painted faces and bodies) feel so intimate.
Originally published in Germany under the title Die Nuba von Kau, this is a phenomenal book and highly collectible.
