Manuel Ocampo: Heridas de la Lengua
Heridas de la Lengua - translates to wounds of the tongue.
Born and raised in the Philipppines, Ocampo is largely self-taught as a painter; he first published cartoons in his mother’s newspaper in Quezon City, then was “instructed by a Catholic priest to create impeccable facsimiles of Spanish colonial folk painting” to be sold to European and American collectors as the real thing. It is these two experiences – working within the circulation of discourse (mass media) and commodities (colonial baroque) - that Ocampo developed a hybrid vocabulary.
