Lady: Lisa Lyon

By Robert Mapplethorpe. Text by Bruce Chatwin.

Mapplethorpe's photographic study of bodybuilder / performance artist Lisa Lyon is incredible for so many reasons, not least of which is its cover. Breaking down the stereotypes often seen in female portraiture, these highly stylised images personify Lyon's own concept of a woman's body: "neither masculine nor feminine, but feline." So graceful are the poses, so cat-like are her legs and arms outstretched. And so contrasting is the image of a beautiful, strong woman in a dress, flexing muscle.

Ms. Lyon adds her own comment. "The pictures are a little hard, like us."
