Arthropods: New Design Futures
By Jim Burns.
An excellent survey of the incredible avant-garde and counter-cultural design and architecture of the early 1970s including the works of Archigram, Superstudio, Coop, Himmelblau, Archizoom, Eventstructures Research Group, EAT, Cedric Price, Ant Farm and others. The ideas for radical environmental change as imagined by these groups are as relevant today as ever. In the words of Arnold Toynbee: “In our time, the amount of change in the environment which an individual has to keep on readjusting himself psychologically is so great, and the pace of this change so rapid that the demand is straining the human psyche’s capacity to adapt.” Looking through this insanely visionary collection is to lament the failure of the modernist’s dream and to wonder how we could be living now, had the Arthropod’s succeeded.
