Ahead of the Game
Four versions of the Avant-garde.
By Calvin Tomkins.
"Fraud, frenzy of simple fun?" asks the back cover of this book, questioning the practice of four artists of the 60's American avant-garde art scene. Of course they're all men: Marcel Duchamp, John Cage, Jean Tinguely, Robert Rauschenberg.
In this all-male context, it's ironic to read the opening quote by Duchamp himself:
"It is curious to note to what extent memory is unfaithful, even for the most important period's of one's life. It is this, indeed, that explains the delightful fantasy of history."
