A Double Life
Nan Goldin / David Armstrong.
Nan: “David is the first person I ever took a picture of – and the last one I photographed today. He’s the one who named me Nan and showed me my personality. That was twenty-five years ago and we still live together now.”
David: “I used to think Nan and I were complete opposites and it was all about the complement. But it’s different from that. At the same time we’re identical – like our pictures. At first they seem to come from different planets but finally they arrive at the same place.”
A Double Life is part diary, part (very raw) family album. It is the story of two old friends, photographers, survivors of the druggy 70s, and devotees of the drag-queen subculture. Here Goldin and Armstrong present photographs that summarize the long strange trip they and their extended ‘family’ have taken together.
