Duane Hanson

By Kirk Varnedoe

A fantastic, image-packed monograph on the work of sculpture hyperrealist, Duane Hanson. Casting predominantly “common people”, belonging to a world of grotesque suburban seediness, blue-collar service jobs and banal consumerism, Hanson's human forms are unsettling - yet deeply fascinating. Housewives grocery shopping, passed-out junkies, fat slobbish men drinking beer and watching the telly... Hanson's interest is in the common denominator and nonelitist. Included are his key works made during the 70s and 80s as well as many previously unpublished photographs. And for those interested in the artist's technique there is also a short chapter on the process of making the sculptures.
