"Hands Across the Water": Wings Tour USA
Photographs by Hipgnosis.
Hands down best rock 'n roll tour book ever! WINGS TOUR USA. Designed by Hipgnosis -- the group behind some of the most famous album covers of all time (Dark Side of The Moon anyone?) -- in May and June '76, the photos in this book were "intended as a kaleidoscope of places, people and events as opposed to a precise piece of reportage." In effect they are pictures taken on a tour, rather than of a tour.
Punctuated only by memphis-style graphics of clocks ticking, each chapter is a set of B&W photos taken at the same hour, but from different places. And they are the most beautiful and candid images ever taken of a band ever. The sobering reality of this band on the run is the exhausting, repetitive grind: from hotel room, to limo, to airport, back in the limo, into the dressing room and on the stage. Along the way we see fleeting glimpses of passing towns, screaming fans, roadies unloading and musicians tuning up.
