The Art Quilt
By Penny McMorris and Michael Kile. Introduction by John Perreault
A surreal Magritte-meets-Escher landscape, viewed in a four-paneled quilt. The snow on Mount Fuji quilted into the shoulders of a technicolored kimono. American pop explodes in an apocalyptic flea market scene. All the while, sixteen quilt artists examine the emergence of the art quilt, from its beginnings in the Arts and Crafts movement to it’s acceptance in the stuffy art world (pun intended). They also discuss their work and the future of the quilt as art, from the 80s looking forward.
